New Directions Alternative Education Center has established an academic remediation program designed to meet the effective, affective, and situational needs of students.

The program is individualized, self-paced, and differentiated based on student ability.  Students access course material digitally during two+ hour block sessions and have teachers working directly with them to answer specific content questions, facilitate knowledge acquisition, and model learning strategies.

Blending the instructional attributes of a special education and gifted and talented center, New Directions’ academic remediation program is able to address students who wish to accelerate their learning, recover academic credit, or review content in preparation for SOL examinations.

The program flexibility allows students to attend on a referral, volunteer, or interim basis.  Teachers and school counselors work in collaboration with the student and parent to identify needs.  The Leadership Team reviews the recommendation for placement based on anecdotal information and student performance data.  The student is then placed and assigned courses, remedial material, and a timeline for completing coursework.  Access is from 3:20-5:45 p.m. Monday-Thursday with open lab through the day on Friday.
